One Year of Meds...

March 23 - April 5 (One Year):

One year on hormones now. I realized when my last batch of pills came in that I have all the packaging for the medicine I've been taking since I started (I was kinda paranoid about just chucking the boxes with ESTROGEN labels on them in the trash when I first started). I'll add a picture here when I get a chance, it's a huge amount or at least it is to me. So many things have changed in the past year and yet the changes are really subtle. They just tend to add together to make a big difference in the overall picture. I think I had very different ideas of what hormones would do when I started taking them. I knew I wasn't going to become female overnight, but I felt in some ways that the changes would still be obvious while they were happening. In many ways that wasn't the case. Of course there were breasts staring back at me from the mirror, but other than that, I only completely realized that I was actually changing all over at about the 9 month mark. It may have been obvious to others earlier, but I had that residual boy image that kept overriding what I was seeing in the mirror until finally there was too much female to deny. I think (well I hope) that a lot of those changes are evident in the photos I've been taking and I'd like to believe those will be useful to other people headed in this direction. It's a hard decision to make without any promises and sometimes seeing that success is possible is enough to give us that courage we need to get started. At any rate, considering that changes are now more gradual than they once were, I'll most likely update this page on a monthly basis (perhaps every four weeks instead of two?). The details still need to be hashed out.

A friend of mine mentioned the other day on a message board that she now has girl thighs after being on hrt a few months. Having battled with GD all my life, there's something really special about having girl thighs and girl arms and girl hips and...

Meds:
Progynova 2 mg tablets, three times daily
Spironolactone 100 mg tablets, twice daily

March 9 - March 22 (fifty weeks):

So my spironolactone dosage has gone up a small amount again. Hoping it will help kill off a bit more body hair (though I've had some decent results so far). I think gradually, my breasts are continuing to round up a bit. Still a little ways to go for me to be happy, but we're on our way. My areolas are fairly large now (at least for what I expected when I started). Areolar size is now between 4 and 5 cms depending on how cold it is :-P I wonder how big they're planning on growing?

February 24 - March 8 (forty-eight weeks):

Suddenly, lately my breasts have gotten really tender again. Especially directly under the nipples. It actually woke me up a few days ago when I rolled over a bit too roughly on them. Also, I think I'm either developing a waist or hips or both. I'm finally getting a bit happier about my physique. An hourglass figure is in the works. In other news, body hair growth continues to decline slowly but surely. That covers most of it. Once we hit 52 weeks here (1 year for the math impaired) I'm probably going to reformat a bit and space out my updates a little bit more.

February 10 - February 23 (forty-six weeks):

Little of note to report lately. Things are mostly the same. Still have some definite tenderness so perhaps I'm just in a lagging phase. Fingers crossed. I was looking at a photograph of myself from last summer yesterday. The changes are noticeable. It's odd to look in the mirror and see a slightly different version of yourself than you're used to. I wonder how much more odd that is after having FFS? Perhaps I can let you all know in the future.

January 27 - February 9 (forty-four weeks):

Somehow I'm starting to get more freckles on my face. Go look at the latest set of pictures in my galleries if you want to see. Generally one gets more freckles when they've been exposed to more sunlight (like in the summer). Considering the fact that it's winter here and I've been outside very little lately (stuck inside with my books), I'm not sure what's causing it. Could it be from my hormone regimen? Perhaps. It's odd that I would just notice it now. Not that it bothers me, just another point to ponder I suppose.

January 13 - January 26 (forty-two weeks):

Very little out of the ordinary to note. Things continue much the same as they have been. At this point it's getting difficult to conceal the fact that I have breasts even with a couple of heavy shirts/sweaters. That should make this summer interesting. At least I'm forced to study all summer instead of work. That will allow me to be a bit more inconspicuous. I wonder if being on meds will make my skin more sensitive to the sun? I've never been one to burn. I actually tan really well even with my northern european roots. Hmm, we'll see.

December 30 - January 12 (forty weeks):

My areolas still appear to be enlarging, albeit slowly. Also, if you can follow me, when I first noticed areolar enlargement I still had the same response when my nipples became hard. That being that the nipple would become erect and the areola itself would contract. While this seems (annecdotal) to be a normal response in males, most girls I know (genetic that is) experience erect nipples without areolar contraction. Well, even though my areolar area still contracts some, it appears (I think) to be either less than it originally was or perhaps it is the same but my areolar response is limited to the same initial area in the tissue and therefore they do not appear to contract as much as they used to. K, that was confusing, hope you followed. I still have tenderness in the breast area, especially around the nipple itself. For the most part, that has yet to go away for any real period of time over the last nearly 40 weeks. No other big changes. Oh, and a friend of mine starts HRT this week so best of luck to her ;-)

December 16 - December 29 (thirty-eight weeks):

So I locked myself out of my room the other day. What's that got to do with my HRT? Well, not so much the locking out as the getting back in. I ended up using a little force and jimmying the lock open but in the process managed to sink a nail into my hand. What was a nail doing sticking out next to your door you say? It wasn't. It just hadn't been hammered in all the way. Turns out I buried the sucker head first into the back of my hand. And we aren't talking about some little, small bore type. More like a 1/4" diameter. It would seem that my skin is a lot more prone to injury than it once was. Fun way to find out just how much. Anyways, enough of the gruesome and gory :-P Things have been moving along nicely. I've had some more breast growth recently which is always a plus. I'm actually considering upping my spironolactone dose by 25-50 mg after talking with some other women about their regiments and doing some literature research. We'll see.

December 2 - December 15 (thirty-six weeks):

Alright, lets talk about side effects on HRT. For the most part I've been spared. Didn't get any crazy mood swings, no muscle cramping, no nausea, no allergic responses, no life threatening medical issues (that I'm aware of), but there are still some things that HRT has definitely had an effect on. For one thing, I've had a bit of a run in this winter with dry skin and especially dry/cracked lips. In past years, I've never had problems with this sort of thing, never used any kind of lip balm in my life until this year. Perhaps those of you from the south have no idea, but when it gets cold up here, it can be pretty bad on the skin. Anyways, that's something to keep an eye out for if you start HRT. Get a good skin lotion and use it liberally. Another side effect I've noticed is a thinning of skin. Although my veins tend to stick out a lot less than they used to, it's become easier to see the blue coloration showing through the skin in some areas. Thinning of the skin tends to be a normal side effect on just about any hormone/steroid so no big worries. That having been said, everything seems to be moving well. I was looking in the mirror the other day and noticed that the peach fuzz I used to have on the back of my neck and along my shoulders has disappeared entirely (thank you estrogen). I'll try not to be as late next time with my update ;-)

November 18 - December 1 (thirty-four weeks):

Ok, well I knew I was losing some muscle mass, etc, but I hadn't realized how much until the other day when I woke up bleeding. And no, I didn't try to kill myself, here's the story. Last Christmas, I was given a men's watch as a gift (before I had decided 100% on transitioning) which I then had fitted to my wrist size. Turns out that (even though I hadn't noticed before) I've lost so much size in my wrist area that this watch actually cut me from rubbing up and down. I know, I know, why do I still wear it if it's a men's watch? Well for one thing it was a gift and then secondly, I still have to be a guy at school and a girl's watch would look a bit silly. Anyways, so I know some of you are saying, how did you lose weight/muscle mass in your wrist, is that even possible? I didn't really think so before but the proof is ...er... in the pudding. I'm headed back to the mall soon to get 3 links removed from the band. Considering that there are only 12 total right now, that's quite a substantial number and I know it fit very well from before. Regardless though, having had attention drawn to the area, I've realized how thin in general my arms are getting. Nothing near what they used to be. So for those of you out there on HRT, you've been warned ;-) K, everything else is much the same. Catch you again in two weeks.

November 4 - November 17 (thirty-two weeks):

I've noticed recently that my hair and skin are noticeably softer than they once were. Could it be because I use lotion now on a daily basis and wash my hair with better products than I used to? Maybe but I think at least some of it has to be from my HRT also. On a different note, facial hair growth has gone down drastically. Grows super slow now and it's thinned out up along the cheek bone, in the chin and on the neck a bit which is wonderful. I really need to get in and finish up some electro, shaving is totally uncool.

October 21 - November 3 (thirty weeks):

The weeks go by pretty quick it seems. Hard to believe I've been taking these meds for more than half a year now. It's really second nature now I don't even think about it when I take them these days. Not much of note since our last entry here. Growth seems about the same, slow but, I would guess, continuing. I have noticed that the skin around my areolas seems to be getting darker again. Perhaps I may have some enlargement again. This discoloration seems to be most prominent at the base and a little to the sides. Not sure if there is a specific growth pattern to it or whatever. At this point my areolas are between quater and half dollar size for those of you who have asked. Personally, the size doesn't matter very much to me as long as the overall breast size turns out to be satisfying. Nothing else special to report.

October 7 - October 20 (twenty-eight weeks):

Okay, lately my breasts seem to be rounding up a bit. I think I'm definitely getting a bit of increased fullness which is very cool. Also I've noticed that I have had a substantial decline in body hair recently. Plus the follicles that are left seem to be a lot lighter in color, a lot finer and a lot slower growing. Yay, body hair is gross. I'm not sure if I should contribute this to having been on hormones now for about 6 months or to the fact that I recently increased my dosages. Hmmm. Oh, I also added a link above that discusses the tanner stages of breast development. I really need to add a new section titled "Resources". So much to do, so much to do...

September 23 - October 6 (twenty-six weeks):

It looks like we're still seeing good results from increasing dosages. From what I've read, my estrogen (progynova) is near the max suggested dosage and the Spironolactone is about 50 mg short of the max so I'm really not planning on going any higher. For the many people who have asked, I guess I'm around an A cup at this point, maybe slightly larger. Not too bad for six months, or so I've been told. Nothing too exciting to report over two weeks ago. Growth patterns are similar, no noticeable side effects yet, nipple sensitivity is still very high (especially early in the morning for some reason). That's about all.

Meds:
Progynova 2 mg tablets, three times daily

September 9 - September 22 (twenty-four weeks):

We have growth again! Perhaps the new meds are starting to kick in. Whatever it is, I've noticed a new increase in fullness and some mild increase in size in my breasts. It's very cool, they're actually starting to look like real breasts. A very wonderful thing for a young t-girl moving along in the world. Also arm and leg hair is getting very fine these days. Another great sign that the hormones are doing their job. Everyone says not to do electro or laser on your arms until you're about a year or two into hrt or you'll be wasting money. Now I can see why. Very nice. Okay, well, not much else. See you in two weeks.

August 26 - September 8 (twenty-two weeks):

Not much new lately. Still have a ton of sensitivity to the areolar/nipple area. From talking to other girls who have been through HRT, it would seem that this sensitivity begins to wane once the breasts have reached their full potential from hormone treatment. So for the time being, we'll consider this a good sign. Overall, I'm happy where the last 5ish months have gotten me. A lot of girls think that taking these little pills or getting injections is going to make them become beautiful women overnight with no difficulty passing. If only that were the reality. Wouldn't it be nice? So I don't have any complaints. I went into this with realistic expectations. School has made it more difficult to be active and lose weight (all that sitting around on my rear studying for hours and hours doesn't help much) so I've hit a little wall there. Perhaps I'll be changing my caloric intake soon. I guess that's all for today.

August 12 - August 25 (twenty weeks):

After spending some solid time on my new med regiment, I think my development is moving along again nicely. The first signs were about a week after changing doses. My nipples have become extra sensitive again (did they ever really stop being sensitive?) so much so that brushing against things and sleeping on my stomach at night could cause discomfort. This is not dissimilar to what I experienced early on when I first started HRT. Further, whether it's from my new dosages (unlikely as they are fairly recent) or just from prolonged use, my breasts seem to be rounding and filling out more. On a seperate note (for the girls who have asked), up to this point I haven't noticed any...err...decreased function. However, I would have to say that my "drive" has seriously decreased which is a firm positive in my mind.

July 29 - August 11 (eighteen weeks):

A note to all the girls out there who are taking hormones or considering it. Losing weight on mones is hard work, lol. Before, I was the type of person who could lose weight just by thinking thin. In fact if I wasn't careful, and made sure I sat down to every meal, I'd drop pounds. However, since beginning hrt, that sort of thing is all behind me. I'm starting to really understand why some women are stuck in a perpetual diet phase. Live and learn. Now obviously before I started mones I new that it would take effort to drop pounds, I just wasn't quite clued into the work necessary. So I guess the moral is: "Hormones make it very difficult to shed those extra pounds so you'd better expect to put in a lot of effort if you're planning on slimming up after starting hrt." Not much to report from the growth and development department. That being said, I received my new meds a few days ago so wish me luck.

July 15 - July 28 (sixteen weeks):

Ok, well, another two weeks behind us. Things appear to still be moving ahead. Although measurements haven't changed remarkably, there does still appear to be some enlargment in the areolas. Also, I've started to notice that the hair on my arms and legs is starting to come in much lighter (blonde like peach fuzz in many spots) which is awesome. Electrolysis for the face is bad enough, I don't think I'd have the patience to do an entire body. I'm planning on starting a higher dosage in the next two weeks most likely, so we'll see where that gets us.

July 1 - July 14 (fourteen weeks):

Well, here we are again, two weeks later. Not a whole lot has changed. No earth shattering growth (much to my dismay ;-). Again, I'm planning on upping my dosage near the beginning of August so hopefully that will give me another boost. One thing to report, I've noticed that my underwear has been fitting a lot better lately. There's something very exciting about that, but unless you've been through this sort of thing, you may not be able to relate. I added measurements as promised. Hope the information here is helpful/interesting/whatever to someone out there. That's all for now, check back.

June 17 - June 30 (twelve weeks):

Wow, has it been three months already? Where does the time go? I'd have to say that so far I am pretty happy with everything that hormones have done for me. Not to say that I am anywhere near done yet, but I think that I am coming along pretty nicely. Anyways, in the last two weeks I have definitely had some major areola growth. Breast size is still moving along steadily and I believe my hips are starting to come along. Oh, and I'm gonna try to put up some measurements of my growth and development so everyone can get a better idea of what's going on. Hopefully, it will also be helpful for the gurls out there in a similar position so they have an idea what to expect while they are on HRT. Well, I suppose that wraps it up, see you all here again in two weeks.

June 3 - June 16 (ten weeks):

Well, here we are again. Had more definite growth in breast size. It seems rather early to be noticing so many changes, but I've chalked it up to being more aware of my body, being fairly close to puberty still, and changes in body weight. At this point I think going around without a shirt in public would probably be a no no ;-) Anyways, having lost some weight (not that I was a chunker or anything before) makes my breasts look a lot more out of place. I have noticed that my overall appearance is much softer. I think you can even see this in my pictures. If you look at my older pics (from a few years ago) and compare them to the newest ones. Oh, and I think my hips are starting to sprout. That's all for now I suppose.

Meds:
Progynova 2 mg tablets, twice daily

May 20 - June 2 (eight weeks):

Not a whole lot of change since my last update. I believe I am still getting mild growth in my breasts. I have decided that I will most likely up my dosage near mid summer (about a month from now). Kids, don't try this at home. Anyways, I am happy with the results I am getting, and if I do see continued growth and development, I may scratch that idea. We'll have to wait and see.

Meds:
Progynova 2 mg tablets, twice daily
Spironolactone 25 mg tablets, four times daily

May 6 - May 19 (six weeks):

Again, breast size is noticeably larger. Nipples are larger and seem to be hard all the time (no complaints here, lol). My thighs are a little larger as well and I've lost some definite muscle tone there. My waist has slimmed down some (which is awesome) and I've also lost weight (from exercise and diet) which can only help. One more thing that is very interesting and usually reported not to happen when on hormones, I have noticed a definite reduction in facial hair growth, but this may be due to the fact that I had a substantial amount when I began therapy and also because I am still fairly close to puberty. Either way, I'm not complaining. I guess that's all for now, sorry for the wait.

Meds:
Progynova 2 mg tablets, twice daily

April 22 - May 5 (four weeks):

Well, definitely some change in nipple size. Breasts have also started to swell slightly with tenderness. I think my skin has dried up some (a side effect of hormone therapy) and I sweat a lot less than I used to (when I go running). I'm also seeing an increased deposit of water (or fat maybe?) below the navel and a decrease above it, which has definitely started to help my shape . I think I may be losing some muscle/fat in my arms too, they look a little thinner. Again, this could just be wishful thinking. Thats all for now. Check back soon.

Progynova 2 mg tablets, twice daily

April 8 - April 21 (first two weeks):

Wow! It's awesome to finally be getting started. Becoming the woman I've always been inside. Anyway, there haven't been any earth shattering changes yet, but definitely some important changes are occuring. There is noticeable swelling in the nipple and areolar area and personally I think I may already be experiencing some minor water redistribution (of course this may just be wishful thinking...). So, all in all, a successful start. I'll keep you all up to date.
